SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test): register online on CollegeBoard's Website
- When it’s taken: The SAT is offered seven times per year. College-bound students should take it in the spring of junior year, and again in the fall of senior year. Advanced students may choose to take it 2-3 times before senior year. GCHS is not a testing location for the SAT, but students can take it at other area high schools. Students will see the list of test locations when they register.
- What it covers: The SAT has two sections: Reading and Writing (64 mins) and Math (70 mins). The SAT is an aptitude test, testing reasoning and verbal abilities. No penalty for guessing if you do not know the answer.
- Why it’s offered: College admissions officers use the SAT to gauge college-readiness. Several colleges require the SAT or ACT, but there are also colleges that are considered "test-optional" meaning that it is up to the student to decide if the SAT or ACT will help their application profile.
- SAT Subject Tests: There are 20 SAT Subject Tests in subjects such as math, literature, several foreign languages, history and the sciences. Subject Tests can be used for a student's application profile for particularly selective colleges or to gain admittance into majors that require a specific background or skill set. Look at the admission requirements or speak to an admissions counselor at your selected colleges to determine if a subject test is a good option for you. They are usually offered on the same days as the SAT.
- Registration Dates: Registration is done online at sat.collegeboard.org. The fee is $68. Fee waivers are available from the counseling office to students who qualify (come ask us!).
