"There is no substitute for a book in the life of a child." M.E. Chase
Grades PreK - 5
The Gates Chili School District believes in a developmental approach to teaching literacy. This approach requires teachers to use differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs of our students. This is done through Reading and Writing Workshop. As a district, we have established common structures, language, and resources to ensure consistent literacy instruction.
Grades 6 - 8
Our Middle School English program focuses on expanding student knowledge and abilities in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts including plays, short stories, novels, and poems. As students engage in the reading of these texts, emphasis will be placed on evaluating and analyzing to form a deeper meaning of the author's words. In addition, students in each grade level will develop their writing skills further through the writing process. The writing process includes prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing a final written piece. These pieces of written work will include a narrative, argumentative and research-based informational writing piece. The Middle School is a 1:1 environment in which students can support and enhance their learning through the use of a district-issued laptop. Our English teachers utilize these devices in a variety of ways in order to encourage our students to be college and career ready and develop 21st-century skills.
Please visit our Middle School English Department for further information.
Grades 9 - 12
Our High School English Department curriculum is designed to build upon the fundamental skills of reading, writing and communication. Additionally, our teachers foster the development of skills necessary to ensure our students are college and career ready. As we transition to New York State's Next Generation Learning Standards, specific emphasis will continue to be placed on reading both literary and nonfiction based texts. Students will also continue to focus on the writing process, taking advantage of the opportunity for more creative writing, as outlined in the new standards, while maintaining a focus on the analytical and critical thinking writing. At each grade level there is a focus on research building up to the Senior Research Project with is lieu of a final exam in 12th grade. The department looks forward to rigorously exploring and integrating the Next Generation Standards into unit and lesson planning while continuing to integrate meaningful and purposeful technology daily with our 1:1 devices.
