  • VOCAL / GENERAL MUSIC

At Armstrong, we are working to build our musical skills and vocabularies so that we can read, compose, improvise and analyze music to communicate and create as musicians. All grades participate in grade level sharing videos for Music in Our Schools Month in March. Students share some of the skills and musical knowledge they have gained in music class. Please check out Dr. Foley’s webpages for video clips!

Dr. Foley is the vocal and general music teacher for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and the director of After-school Chorus.

All students in 4th and 5th grade general music will prepare three performance pieces as part of the regular general music curriculum.  We will examine various aspects of each piece according to grade level goals and continue to develop our vocal independence through these pieces.  We will have grade level sharing during an in-school concert and an evening concert in January and May.

    INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

At Armstrong, all fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument.  We offer flute, clarinet, saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba and percussion.  Students can sign up in September of their fourth or fifth grade year.

Mr. Holman, who teaches instrument lessons and Band, will schedule one 30 minute lesson per week for each student.  During these lessons, students learn how to put their instruments together, play with a steady beat, and read music.  At each lesson, students have an opportunity to play with a group and alone.  Students are asked to spend 20 minutes practicing at home each evening to prepare for the next lesson.  Once students have reached a proficient level of playing, Mr. Holman will ask them to join the band!

The Armstrong band meets twice a week for 50 minutes, once before and once after the school day. The band performs at concerts in January, May and June.
