With our new Common Core Standards, there is an increased emphasis on comprehension and "deep thinking." Several parents have asked me, "What are the right questions to ask when reading with my child at home?" Here is a list of some good questions to get your child to dig deeper while reading.
Is this a good title for this story? Why or why not?
What was the problem in this story?
How do you think__________ (a character) felt?
How do you know that?
What was the most important part of the story?
Why was that part important?
How did the author make this book interesting?
How did ______(a character) change in the story?
What does the title __________mean?
Do you like the ending? What did you like about it?
Why do you think the author wrote the book?
How did they feel at the end of the story? Why did they feel that way?
What was the author's message?
Ask them to Show the sections in the book and tell the kind of information in each.
Look at the headings on the page. What does the heading tell you? What will you be learning about?
