English for Speakers of Other Languages
What is ESOL?
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is a program that provides support for English Language Learners (ELLs).
Who is in the ESOL Program?
Students in kindergarten through twelfth grade who have been tested and need to learn the English language. This program is required by New York State.
Who Teaches ESOL?
Students are taught by certified ESOL teachers. Students learn to listen, speak, read and write in English. The Gates Chili ESOL Program focuses on teaching English language skills and on helping students understand their classroom work. The ESOL teachers work closely with classroom teachers to help your child succeed in school.
Students are taught in small classes based on how well they understand, speak, read and write English. There are three levels of instruction: beginning, intermediate and advanced. At each level, students learn about culture in the United States. The Gates Chili ESOL Program also recognizes the importance of each student's native language and culture.
Elementary ESOL Program
ESOL students attend Florence Brasser, Walt Disney or Neil Armstrong Elementary School. They are in a regular classroom with students of the same age and go to the ESOL teacher for English language instruction.
Home and School Together
Learning English is a process that takes time, effort and work on the part of the student, family and the Gates Chili ESOL program. We all work together.
"Together we teach and inspire excellence for all learners."
